Mary Louise Gurley
Mary Louise was an ambitious woman with an entrepreneurial spirit, who seeked out change, rather than waiting to adapt to change. Mary Louise was caring, resourceful, determined, and very generous. She was thoughtful, loving, and honest. A wonderful woman who put others' needs before her own and showed compassion to everyone she met, especially those down on their luck. Louise always kept a bushel of money; what she called "Mad Money". Mad Money enabled one to do whatever they wanted to do, whenever they wanted to do it. Louise loved to dance and dance she did in the 1940"s, exhibiting a dance called, "The Mess Around" at famous night clubs like the "Cotton Club" in Harlem, New York. She won many dance competitions and would make a bold, grand entrance, dragging her luxurious coat on the floor behind her. Louise loved fashion and had impeccable, exquisite taste. If anyone asked Louise if she was ok, or if she needed anything, she would say, "A Bushel of Money". To that end, The Mary Louise Gurley Bushel of Money Foundation, Inc. was established in support of those in need, especially children and cancer survivors. This foundation provides educational scholarships and partners with other non-profit organizations to help end life-threatening diseases, such as Cancer, Diabetes and Alzheimer's. Those in need will receive a Bushel of Money, that will be disbursed as appropriate on March 31st of each year on the birthday of Mary Louise Gurley in her honor. As Mary Louise would always end a conversation, saying goodbye to those she encountered with this phrase, "Be Good to Yourself"!
