Mary Louise Gurley
A Legacy of Vision, Generosity, and “A Bushel of Money”
Mary Louise Gurley was the embodiment of bold ambition, entrepreneurial instinct, and unwavering compassion. She did not wait for change to arrive. She pursued it, shaped it, and used it as a vehicle to elevate not only her own life, but the lives of others.
Defined by her caring nature, resourcefulness, and fierce determination, Mary Louise lived with intention. She was thoughtful, loving, and deeply generous. Her character was rooted in service, consistently placing the needs of others before her own, extending dignity and compassion to everyone she encountered, especially those facing hardship.
At the core of her philosophy was a concept she proudly called “A Bushel of Money.” To Mary Louise, this was more than savings. It was freedom, security, and the power to act without limitation. What she often referred to as her “Mad Money” represented the ability to create opportunity, move with confidence, and live life on one’s own terms.
But her vision extended far beyond personal independence.
Mary Louise believed in building wealth with purpose, using real estate as the primary vehicle to create both financial strength and community impact. Her long-term aspiration was to acquire and steward multiple properties, not only as appreciating assets, but as safe, stable homes for those in need.
Her philosophy reflected disciplined, forward-thinking investment strategies:
Acquire and hold real estate assets to build long-term wealth
Leverage rental income to expand and sustain a growing portfolio
Reinvest strategically to increase ownership and community reach
Provide housing stability for underserved individuals and families
Use wealth as a tool to uplift, empower, and give back
She understood that true success was not measured solely by ownership, but by the lives improved through it.
Her vibrant spirit extended into every aspect of her life. In the 1940s, she captivated audiences in Harlem, New York, performing “The Mess Around” in iconic venues such as the legendary Cotton Club. Known for her electrifying presence, she won numerous dance competitions and made unforgettable entrances, often trailing a luxurious coat behind her with confidence and style.
Mary Louise also possessed impeccable taste in fashion, carrying herself with elegance, boldness, and pride. Her presence was a statement, her style a reflection of her belief in self-worth and excellence.
When asked how she was doing or if she needed anything, she would simply smile and say:
“A Bushel of Money.”
That phrase has since become a movement.
In her honor, The Mary Louise Gurley Bushel of Money Enterprise was established to carry forward her legacy of ownership, empowerment, and giving. Built on the foundation of real estate investment as its primary vehicle, the Enterprise also leads philanthropic initiatives and community-centered events, including breast cancer benefit fashion shows and charitable partnerships supporting critical causes such as cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s.
Through strategic outreach, community engagement, and purposeful giving, the Enterprise continues her mission of creating opportunity where it is needed most. Each year, on March 31st, her birthday, individuals and families are honored with a symbolic “Bushel of Money”, thoughtfully distributed to reflect her lifelong commitment to lifting others.
Mary Louise Gurley lived with style, purpose, and heart. Her legacy is one of action, vision, and generosity, a reminder that true wealth is not just what we build, but what we give.
And as she so beautifully left with everyone she met:
“Be Good to Yourself!"
